Early in the days of Internet Partnership Radio, Hurricane Season 2005 devastated areas of the Atlantic Basin. From Category 3 Dennis slamming Pensacola, Florida....to Category 4 Emily striking Cozumel, Mexico....to Rita's violent Gulf path of destruction....to the record-breaking Hurricane Wilma.
However, in late August 2005, IPR365.com (Formally Radio NHCWX) covered a storm named Katrina, which would forever become the current benchmark for monster hurricanes. Like Hugo in the 1980s and Andrew in the 1990s, Katrina would become the hurricane on which all other hurricanes are judged.
This particular clip is raw, completely unedited audio from Sunday morning, August 28, 2005 as Hurricane Katrina was approaching the Louisiana coastline with 175 mph winds, a solid Category 5 Hurricane.
The IPR crew covered Katrina with thoughts, analysis and official information as the Catastrophic Hurricane churned in the Gulf of Mexico. While Katrina would weaken to a borderline Category 3/4 Hurricane just prior to landfall, it was the extreme intensity the hurricane held at the time of this broadcast that contributed to the horrific damage.
